Ernie Taylor from North London is a disabled war veteran and ex-professional photographer with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), who has been able to continue his passion for photography through a TGA Mobility scooter and being relocated to Suffolk following the trauma of the Hackney riots.

Ernie was originally injured back in 1974 when a milk churn bomb detonated near his patrol whilst serving in Northern Ireland as a member of the 3rd Battalion The Light Infantry. Military bravery had always run in Ernie’s family with his Great Grandfather Woodhams being awarded two George Medals, one in each of the World Wars and was to continue in the future with his Nephew, Steven Campbell being tragically killed in Afghanistan in 2010 whilst serving in the 2nd Battalion The Rifles. Ernie’s terrible experience and resultant injuries including shell shock resulted in him retiring with honours from the armed forces, however the effects of PTSD have compounded these more recently. With early discharge from the army, Ernie faced a crossroads in his life and decided that he would pursue his life-long passion for photography as a full-time job. Ernie’s resultant photographic career gave him the opportunity to shoot all across the world including the majority of Europe and countries such as Sweden, Morocco and Sierra Leone. However with the devastating news that he had a tumour on his brainstem that led to a stroke in 2007, Ernie was left wondering whether he would ever be able to capture life from behind the lens ever again.

He recovered from surgery but was left living with restricted mobility and unable to work. Ernie desperately needed to find the means to venture outside of home so he could continue fulfilling his life as much as possible. Being house bound and with the terrible news that his Nephew had been lost in active service, Ernie felt he had to find some way of leaving home and paying his respects at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday 2010. Through Motability and TGA pulling out all the stops, they managed to fast track a Breeze mobility scooter to him in a matter of days so that he could attend the march with fellow veterans and remember fallen comrades. This day represented a new beginning for Ernie as freedom had returned to his life and his passion for photography could begin again.

However in 2011 Ernie had to suffer the London riots around his home in Hackney, which was an awful experience, heightened by his inability to cope with crowds or loud noises due to PTSD. At this time he had also endured numerous problems with a nuisance neighbour who was violent and continually played loud music. Ernie was desperate to move home as he explains: “As the riots were around my home it was just like being back in Belfast during the 1970’s – an absolute nightmare. I just survived Belfast but here I am again in a volatile environment but immobile apart from my TGA scooter this time which is even more scary. These tipped me over the edge. I had already endured problems for over two years with a neighbour vandalising my mobility scooter. My TGA Breeze scooter, which was featured recently on BBC Top Gear, is my lifeline with the outside world so this was the final straw. Thank goodness SSAFA and One Housing Group saved me.”

Ernie appeared in the press on his TGA mobility scooter as he story was so compelling and was then contacted by One Housing Group to discuss relocating him. The charity SSAFA Forces Help then assisted Ernie with his relocation to Lowestoft in Suffolk as he details: “SSAFA did everything from then on and moved me in the space of a couple of days including all my furniture and everything of which I am eternally grateful. I can’t thank them enough for this and their support of fellow ex service personnel like myself who find things hard to handle. Now I am enjoying my new peaceful life on the coast and thoroughly enjoying my photography onboard my TGA Breeze mobility scooter.”

When asked about why he enjoys photography so much Ernie replies: “Even since I decided to stop smoking and use the money to purchase my first camera I have been hooked on photography. I get an immense buzz from seeing my compositions and everyday I know, whatever the weather, there are pictures out there waiting for me. Being able to experience the fresh air is so important for me these days and photography helps me stay positive and healthy which has only been possible thanks to my TGA Breeze 4. This fantastic, rugged piece of kit has no problems with negotiating the off-road terrain I like to drive on so I can achieve my dramatic coastal shots. It has an impressive 30-mile radius on one charge and is so easy to control even though I have no movement down my left side. I totally depend on my Breeze for independence outside the home and its proven reliability and performance gives me total peace of mind. Since living with restricted mobility, I have shot over 20,000 images and now I have the wheels to do even more thanks to my Breeze S4.”

Ernie has exhibited his work at the Off Broadway Gallery, Broadway Market, London and following such impressive reviews, he is currently looking for other opportunities to display his work.

Eric Rivers, 45, from Enfield north London, is terminally ill with Motor Neurone Disease but can now continue to be cared for at home thanks to a complete house make-over by BBC DIY SOS and the donation of a high quality double combination assistive bed by Theraposture of Westbury, Wiltshire.

Theraposture Ltd is a privately owned, family run business and has been the leading specialist in bespoke assistive furniture for over three decades. When approached by BBC researchers to assist with a DIY SOS ‘Big Build’ in Enfield, the Westbury team were more than delighted to oblige as Liam Braddell, Sales Director explains: “Our business is first choice for most Healthcare Professionals, charities and less able individuals looking for handcrafted, tailor-made assistive furniture which blends effortlessly into anyone’s home. The BBC were looking for a bed that combined height adjustment and profiling capabilities, which would perfectly meet the needs of Eric and his wife Davina, who were desperate to stay in their own home. They also needed many adaptations to their two-bed terraced house so that the space was practical both for everyday living and as a care environment. Without a high quality, specialist profiling bed, Eric would not be able to remain at home due to the levels of pain he was enduring at night and his wife was desperate for a good nights sleep. The Theraposture bed became the main focal point of the whole TV show.”

Liam continues: “The 5’6” wide double combination bed we donated encompasses two separate sleeping platforms with full profiling and high adjustment for Eric and a static side for Davina. This allows the couple to continue sharing a bed whilst benefitting from independent function on Eric’s side so that Davina is not disturbed during the night. The profiling allows Eric to position himself so that comfort is maximised and the height adjustment ensures getting in and out of bed is safe and controlled. As the bed consists of two separable halves locked by a latching device, it can be split and one half moved easily on smooth rolling castors so that Davina has access to both sides of Eric’s mattress. This is essential for her so that the risk of back injury is minimised whilst caring or hoisting Eric in the future. The two individual bed surrounds and wall mounted headboard were upholstered in a contemporary fabric chosen by the DIY SOS on-set designer Gabrielle Blackman to match the new bedroom colour scheme. A multi-positional grab handle was also added to Eric’s side of the bed to assist him with repositioning during the night and when standing up. Both sides were equipped with a Theraposture luxury pocket sprung mattress which delivers exceptional postural support.”

Eric was diagnosed with Motor Neurone disease 18 months ago, which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to weakness and wasting of muscles. Eric, his wife (51) and three daughters (aged 6, 11 and 13) were nominated for the TV programme by two close friends who felt they desperately needed help especially as their compact house was unsuitable for all their needs. Eric and Davina had always shared their room with their youngest daughter and access upstairs was becoming impossible hence one of their friends approached the BBC. Following an initial visit the TV researchers unfortunately concluded their house was too small for a ‘Big Build’, however their friend did not accept this and began tweeting Nick Knowles on Twitter, the DIY SOS celebrity presenter, for several months until the decision was reversed.

Following the nine-day build which involved the addition of an extra loft bedroom, a vertical mobility lift, wet room and comprehensive structural and aesthetic redesigns, Eric and his family’s new home was revealed to them by Nick and the BBC crew. This emotional unveiling also gave Eric chance to thank the large number of tradesmen and suppliers, including Theraposture, who had contributed to this life-changing gift. This project along with the provision of the specialist assistive bed from Theraposture, meant Eric could remain in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by his family and expensive care costs could be avoided.

A few weeks after the programme had been filmed, the difference the Theraposture bed had made to Eric’s life was considered to be ‘phenomenal’ by himself and his family. Eric concludes: “The improvement in my mobility since owning a Theraposture bed is absolutely astounding and I can honestly say the change has been almost instantaneous. My physiotherapist has been so impressed with the reduction in my leg spasms and the stiffness in my legs is not so pronounced. Before I slept on my new Theraposture bed, I was in constant pain during the night and regularly would have to get up which left me feeling extremely drained during the day. Now I have the capability to position myself independently and can rest at the perfect angle of elevation without disturbing Davina who is now enjoying the best nights sleep in over 12 months. We are both more active during the day and our children’s quality of life has also vastly improved. The bed relieves pressure on my muscles and breathing at night is so much easier. This bed is truly ‘magical’ and alongside the BBC and all the tradesmen who were involved with the makeover, I cannot thank Theraposture enough for this life-changing donation. I would like the Motor Neurone Disease Association to recommend Theraposture beds to all people affected by this condition.”

Steve Tarrant, 51 from Poole in Dorset, in association with TGA, the leading mobility scooter specialist, will attempt to travel the furthest distance ever in 24 hours on a mobility scooter at the 2012 Mobility Roadshow (Peterborough Arena, 21-23 June), starting at 2pm on the 21 June 2012.

Steve Tarrant is an inspiring less able motorsport marshal who survived a highly publicised near-fatal crash incident at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2000. He marshals at around 30-40 motorsport events per year such as the Le Mans 24 Hours, Petit Le Mans at Atlanta and Goodwood meetings. Steve lost a leg above the knee and suffered multiple injuries when an F1 racing car collided with him at 100mph whilst marshaling on the finish line at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Steve managed to miraculously pull through following this terrible accident and now intends to establish a new Guinness World Record™ on a TGA mobility scooter similar to the one he uses on a daily basis. He will be simultaneously raising funds for two charities – Accessible Motorsport who help less able individuals enjoy racing and the charity associated with TGA at the Mobility Roadshow (Stand B19), the Royal British Legion (Stand OS40).

The current Guinness World Record™ for ‘The Greatest distance covered in 24 hours by a mobility scooter’ stands at 247.84 km (154 miles), which was achieved in 13 hours 50 minutes by Jackie Weeden on 15 May 2011. Steve intends to smash this record as he explains: “Since surviving my horrific ordeal at Goodwood, I have always had a steely determination and thrive on a challenge, I am so up for this! With TGA Mobility supplying the scooter and pit crew, along with support from the Mobility Roadshow organisers, Mobility Choice, I will be able to tackle this world record in a unique location. The Speedway ‘Ring’ within the Peterborough Arena is the perfect setting for me to undergo this attempt and I have calculated that approximately 750 laps are required to beat the record, a very tall order – but I am ready for anything. As I regularly marshal for lengthy periods of time, combined with my motorsport knowledge, I feel confident that I can do this and can’t wait for the starting clacson to sound!”

Steve will be riding through the night on a robust TGA Breeze S4 mobility scooter that is designed for durability and comfort. This is the same model that recently won the extreme mobility scooter challenge on BBC Top Gear and is renowned for market-leading performance across the UK. The highly experienced Dom Thomas, TGA’s Service Manager, will be leading the pit crew team and will be on hand to supervise battery changes and assist Steve if any unlikely technical issues arise. Daniel Stone, TGA’s Managing Director comments: “When we conceived this world record attempt, Steve was our obvious choice to drive the Breeze as he has unsurpassed knowledge and experience of both motorsport and mobility. With the combination of Steve onboard, the Mobility Roadshow as the ideal setting and a high performance TGA Breeze, I feel sure we can achieve this feat. I thank Mobility Choice for making this exciting opportunity possible and as ever look forward to a busy and lively show.”

Jacqui Jones, Executive Director of the Mobility Roadshow concludes: “We fully admire Steve’s determination to tackle this amazing World Record and wish him all the very best of luck. As the original consumer mobility event, The Mobility Roadshow is such a unique event in so many ways and this record attempt by TGA and Steve will further enhance the excitement around the Peterborough Arena this year. We would encourage all members of the public with an interest in mobility to visit the show as it is a free event and to help cheer Steve on!”

On Stand C135 at Naidex National (NEC, 1–3 May 2012), Etac UK Limited successfully launched its new, comprehensive 5-year warranty package, which is now available on all E880, E885, E890 and E895 powerchairs and a 2-year package for E870 and E875, which generated impressive levels of end user enquiries.

Etac UK has supported Naidex National for over a decade and continues to be a leading and highly respected Scandinavian healthcare product brand across the world. The new 5-year warranty package (conditions apply) that was launched at the NEC on all E880/5 and E890/5 models purchased from the 1 May 2012, reflects the confidence Etac places in its latest powerchairs and customer service. Etac UK were also presented with a special supplier award from the charity Caudwell Children at the event, as it regularly supplies Etac powerchairs to the organisation, which dramatically improve the lives of many less able young people.

Etac powerchairs have always been associated with reliability and market leading versatility, however eliminating potential apprehension regarding possible faults has been addressed with the new warranty being supplied as standard. This resulted in many end users visiting the stand that were considering or even re-considering purchasing an E800 series now with the knowledge that peace of mind is part of the package. In the event of a fault arising with an E880/5 or E890/5 powerchair, the warranty covers all replacement electrical and mechanic parts along with all associated labour costs for 5 years. The E870 and E875 models with lower levels of functionality qualify for a 2-year warranty.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-787" src="http://mobilityblog.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/EtacUKNDXteam-237x300.jpg" alt="Etac UK experienced a positive Naidex National this year with high levels of interest in the new 5-year warranty package being launched at the show. Pictured here from left to right: Ian Carter (Etac UK Managing Director), Craig Sweetlove, Debbie Farrell and Matt James (Product Specialists).

Ian Carter, Etac UK Managing Director explains: “We have experienced a clear interest in our new 5-year, parts and labour warranty package at Naidex National this year. As our powerchairs are highly sophisticated and the prescription process takes time, we always measure our success on enquiries rather that direct sales at events. Many end users, healthcare professionals and relatives or friends of less able individuals all responded positively to our news at Naidex which I feel reflects the wider market’s attitude now to the E800 series and its associated support package. We truly believe in the performance and reliability of our powerchairs and feel confident that the highly advanced, intuitive functionality they offer will continue to meet individuals’ needs now and in years to come. We have strengthened our professional assessing team, so end-users have enhanced support across the country and the Etac UK service department continues to provide expert maintenance and repair solutions.”

The UK’s leading mobility product specialist, TGA, successfully unveiled the new dynamic Vita Midi 4 mobility scooter at Naidex National (1–3 May, Stand B50, NEC), which coincided with a 25% increase in sales compared to the 2011 event.

TGA based in Sudbury, Suffolk, has a proven reputation for providing the widest range of quality mobility scooters across the UK since 1985 and its market-leading customer service department recently won the prestigious BHTA Team of the Year Award 2011. The new Vita Midi 4 launched at Naidex National this year now further enhances the business’s long-standing reputation for products that consistently deliver innovation, reliability and peace of mind to all end users. It also represents a new direction in mobility scooter design as owners move towards products that look less traditional and are more aspirational in both form and function.

Daniel Stone, TGA Managing Director comments: “Bearing in mind we are still unfortunately in tough economic times, Naidex National 2012 has been a highly successful event for us, possibly the best. The team here has been very busy all three days with the new, eye catching Vita Midi making such an impact. Other models in our existing range also proved popular with consumers who were keen to learn more about why the TGA brand is so successful in the UK. In particular, the Breeze range delivered intense interest from all visitors to the stand, which has been heighted by the GT model winning the BBC Top Gear extreme mobility scooter challenge in February. High level brand exposure continued at the show with our National Sales Manager, Tim Ross, being interviewed by The Guardian and appearing in the national newspaper on a TGA Supersport. Overall the show has had a buoyant atmosphere this year and it is always such a pleasure meeting many end users and being able to listen to their needs face-to-face. We intend to continue this momentum towards The Mobility Roadshow in June and beyond.”

The 4-wheel TGA Vita Midi brings to market groundbreaking developments in mobility scooter technology. Taking cutting edge styling, comfort and performance to the next level, the Vita Midi 4 now offers a compact option within the Vita family that has already proven to be a leading choice across the UK. As with all Vitas, it utilises engineering techniques from the motorcycle industry, incorporates state-of-the-art styling and has all round suspension with a revolutionary rear mono shock absorber. It provides comfort for an owner weighing up to 20 stone and has a top speed of 8mph delivered by a powerful 700w transaxle motor. As the chassis is more streamlined and the turning circle has been reduced to a mere 50”, it provides superb manoeuvrability around town and boasts a 20miles range. The new Vita Midi 4 encompasses a full lighting kit for maximum safety with tinted high visibility, long life LED lights along with indicators – all of which use less battery power and hence improve efficiency. The deluxe orthopaedic seat and enhanced LCD tiller are both fully adjustable so optimum ergonomics are achieved for every user along with easier access on and off the scooter.

Srin Madipalli, 26 and from central London is a high-flying corporate lawyer and despite living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), established the highly successful www.disabilityhorizons.com website 12 months ago and continues to manage a network of writers who pulled in 20,000 visits last month.

Srin has Type 2 SMA which is a genetic disease that causes muscle weakness and a progressive loss of movement. There is no cure, but therapy, support and mobility products such as Etac Balder powerchairs are available to help manage the condition. SMA has not held Srin back from achieving a first class degree in Biochemistry at King’s College London and then continuing to qualify as a lawyer. He now enjoys the challenge of being a corporate lawyer within a leading international law firm based in the City of London and continues to be an aspiring social entrepreneur. He uses a highly manoeuvrable Etac Balder F290 for day-to-day mobility and as this sophisticated, Scandinavian-built powerchair provides sit-to-stand capabilities, Srin is able to engage with fellow professionals at eye level and access all his resources easily around the office. Even though Srin spends the majority of his time involved in legal cases, he manages to find time to enjoy global travel and past adventures have included scuba diving, flying a plane, wheelchair trekking through the Alps and a camping safari in Africa. In the second half of 2010, he took time out from work to go travelling around the world for four months and consequently takes a keen personal interest in encouraging disabled people to travel more. This is one of the inspirations behind setting up the Disability Horizons website with co-founder Martyn Sibley who also has SMA.

Disability Horizons is a professionally written, well designed and content rich website which provides wide-ranging information, reviews and news for all individuals with an interest in disability. There is a plethora of useful advice features relating to travel, arts and culture, relationships and technology on the website. These are combined with many inspirational personal stories such as those associated with Tilly Griffiths who also uses an Etac Balder powerchair and has raised over £2 million for the Caudwell Children’s charity. Established in 2011, Disability Horizons has now achieved its highest visitor numbers of 20,000 per month and received national press coverage from the BBC and newspapers such as The Guardian. Both Srin and Martyn have been invited to the 2012 Mobility Roadshow as VIP’s (Peterborough Arena 21-23 June) to introduce Disability Horizons to a wider audience and will be on the judging panel for the Ready, Willing & Mobile children’s competition being launch at the event.

Srin believes his Etac powerchair has been instrumental in helping him achieve his recent goals and being able to enjoy global travel. The Norwegian-built F290 is renowned in the marketplace for delivering high levels of functionality, comfort and reliability, which are synonymous with Scandinavian assistive technology and is supplied by the UK division of Etac based in Hook, Hampshire. Srin comments: “I have always had a passion for achieving something new and my Etac powerchair helps me reach my goals. The dynamic world of corporate law requires that I operate at a fast pace with the ability to respond quickly and professionally to all cases that arise. The F290 allows me to perform to the highest ability in the workplace and from a commercial perspective, it has saved my employers from having to invest in costly adaptations in the office through its superb versatility and manoeuvrability. The chair also looks really good!” In terms of Disability Horizons, Martyn, our network of writers and I will continue to develop the site so it provides further essential information for less able individuals. We hope it becomes the number one community hub for all disabled people out there and I thank everyone who supports the site.”

Srin’s powerchair, the Etac Balder F290, has an extensive range of movements and high levels of functionality both of which give the user increased independence. Whether it is sitting more comfortably at a table, reaching up high or bending down low, the impressive F290 with its high quality components has been carefully designed to empower the individual and make day-to-day living easier. Ideal for both indoor and outdoor use, the Etac Balder F290 has all the advanced features associated with a top-of the-range powerchair. It allows the user to move to a standing position from either lying or sitting in one easy and controlled movement and once in a standing position, it is possible to drive this powerchair over flat even ground and through standard doorways.

Ian Carter, Managing Director of Etac UK concludes: “Srin is a truly inspirational character who has achieved an incredible amount in his 26 years both professionally and as an ambassador for disabled people. His website is an excellent source of information and I would recommend it to anyone with a disability who is planning a trip abroad. It is a real privilege to know Srin and to provide him with one of our reliable F290 powerchairs. On behalf of everyone at Etac UK I wish him all the very best for the future.”

Inspired to freedom by BBC Top Gear and TGA!: William Johnson from Farnborough on his new TGA Vita Sport from Hexagon Healthcare with his wife Katy

William Johnson, 40 from Farnborough, has just experienced a new lease of life after being medically discharged from the Army thanks to a funky TGA Vita mobility scooter from Hexagon Healthcare, which he was first introduced to whilst watching a TGA scooter win an extreme challenge on BBC Top Gear in February.

William served in the Parachute Regiment for three years and was involved with frontline action aboard however he had to leave the Armed Forces due to a brain tumour. Previously he had always enjoyed an active and dynamic lifestyle with a love for outdoor activities but his condition led to difficulties in remaining mobile and being able to drive. Spending so much time confined at home made life difficult for William as his wife Katy explains: “As I work full time as a Speech and Language Therapist at the Royal Surrey Hospital, it has been difficult for me to drive William around in the week so he could enjoy time away from home. We really needed to discover a way of making sure William could go about his daily life independently even though he now lives with restricted mobility. It was only when he saw a ‘cool’ and rugged TGA mobility scooter on BBC Top Gear that William decided this was the answer. He had always considered them to be for more mature people and didn’t realise their amazing capabilities these days.”

Approximately 8 million TV viewers tuned in to watch this Top Gear episode in February, which involved a dramatic race between two teams up a rugged mountain on the Glanusk Estate in the Brecon Beacons, Wales. Three disabled war veterans in association with the charity Help for Heroes competed against the BBC Top Gear presenters who rode radically customised second hand scooters. Nick Gibbons rode a TGA Breeze S4 GT scooter on the Help for Heroes team and won the race, which lasted a full day and tested all the machines to the absolute extreme. Even though the luxury TGA Breeze is primarily designed for high street use, it successfully tackled extreme inclines, soggy thick mud and boulder covered tracks. The TV presenter Richard Hammond also drove a TGA based Supersport scooter, which even though lost the race, still managed to complete the course, which is testament to the strength, reliability and stability of TGA products. William watched this enthralling feature and immediately contacted Hexagon Healthcare near Farnham who are a leading local mobility specialist and stock TGA scooters to see whether they could help him regain his freedom.

William comments: “After seeing BBC Top Gear my opinion on mobility scooters changed dramatically. The foremost being how robust TGA ones are and the type of terrain they can cover. Secondly, you can have a laugh on one. Thirdly, you can go places where once thought impossible. Although the TGA Vita Sport I now own was not on the show, I felt it would be best for me. Having taken it off-road it has far exceeded the manufacturers claims and I cannot thank Hexagon Healthcare enough for helping me change my life for good. Not only can I now venture out alone, Katy and I can once again enjoy walks in the countryside together.”

The new TGA Vita Sport that William now owns from Hexagon Healthcare is unlike any other mobility scooter on the market. Utilising engineering techniques from the motorcycle industry, it incorporate state-of-the art sports styling, a revolutionary rear mono shock absorber, leather bucket seat, alloy wheels, high visibility and tinted LED lights and an advanced LCD tiller control panel. Ideal for owners looking for a less traditional looking scooter, the ergonomic Vita Sport provides comfort for owners weighing up to 159kg (25stone) and delivers a top speed of 12.8km/h (8mph).

Managing Director of TGA, Daniel Stone concludes: “Both Hexagon Healthcare and TGA are delighted to hear that so many less able individuals witnessed our mobility scooter win the extreme challenge on Top Gear and have subsequently purchased one for new found freedom. William is a prime example and we hope he continues to thoroughly enjoy the outdoors in the knowledge he is riding one of the most reliable and safe scooters available today. When you consider how well our scooters performed on Top Gear against specialist off-road machines, end users like William can rest assured they own a very robust and reliable scooter that will always deliver carefree mobility.”

The UK’s leading mobility product specialist, TGA, was delighted to support the TGA Mobility Disabled Golf Day at Billingbear Park Golf Club on Tuesday 17 April 2012 with a Breeze S4 Golf mobility scooter and congratulates the National Events Co-ordinator Graeme Robertson on winning the competition.

The Disabled Golf Society was established in 2010 and now has over 500 members nationwide. Every disabled golfer has the ability to play golf through the society irrespective of specific conditions, including those recovering from a Stroke or diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Arthritis and Parkinson’s. Amputees and individuals who are partially sighted or have reduced hearing can also take part and benefit from the support of the society, which manages over 40 events and competitions throughout the year. 10% of the members are wheelchair users and regular players include the Eastenders actor David Proud and actress Julie Fernandez of ‘The Office’ and ‘Dangerfield’ TV fame has championed the group.

Through a new charity, Fairways4All, the Disabled Golf Society is currently raising funds to purchase equipment to help less able individuals participate in the game. The National Events Co-ordinator Graeme Robertson, who has MS, recommends the specially designed TGA Breeze S4 GT Golf for disabled golfers who are capable of standing but play with restricted mobility and need a fairway-friendly mobility scooter.

Graeme Robertson comments: “12 competitors took part in this particular event and competed to win the TGA Disabled Golf Day trophy. The event was split into two events, the nine hole competition was won by Wokingham resident, Alan Morgan just returning to the game after a Stroke and the 18 hole competition was surprisingly won by myself, also from Wokingham, with 45 stableford points. We had such a great day, were fairly lucky with the weather and would like to thank TGA Mobility for their sponsorship. We look forward to working together once more to promote our society and the marvellous Breeze S4 Golf mobility scooter at the forthcoming Mobility Roadshow in June at Peterborough Arena.”

The 12km/h (8mph) Breeze S4 Golf is a 4-wheel mobility scooter that is part of the renowned Breeze family from TGA, which is a leading seller across the UK. It has an established and respected reputation for providing exceptional reliability, comfort and build quality and the Golf version is adapted with wider wheels and tyres and a golf bag attachment. The wider wheels provide softer contact with fairways so that good traction is maintained without damaging the playing surface. It has a range of up to 30 miles with standard batteries onboard which deliver ample range for 18 holes and the Breeze can safely climb a 9.5 degree slope – perfect for manoeuvring around bunkers and out of bounds if needed.

Daniel Stone, TGA’s Managing Director concludes: “We have been a respected supplier of quality mobility scooters across the UK for 25 years and are always keen to support groups that promote health and well being for less able individuals. We take our corporate social responsibilities seriously and as a company were delighted to sponsor the TGA Mobility Disabled Golf Day. The Breeze S4 Golf has been specifically designed for use on fairways and is an adapted model of the version which recently won the extreme mobility scooter challenge on BBC Top Gear.”

Etac has been a world-leading Scandinavian healthcare specialist for over three decades and its high level of personalised care and support is renowned globally. With its UK division based in Hook, Hampshire, Etac designs, manufactures and supplies high quality assistive devices which improve the daily lives of tens of thousands of people.
Debbie is now responsible for supporting customers in the north of England and before joining Etac UK, was a Registered General Nurse for 15 years. She thoroughly enjoyed her front line duty at hospitals in Macclesfield, Leeds and further afield in Toronto, Canada, however as time progressed she wanted a new challenge. She subsequent spent 10 years working for a renowned moving and handling product specialist before joining Etac UK. Her care-related career has given Debbie the perfect credentials for the new role within Etac UK and is relishing the position as she explains: ‘Building professional relationships with my patients and clients is so important for me. The sense of achievement I gain from helping people improve the quality of their lives is immeasurable. I meet so many inspirational people every week and it is fantastic for me to prescribe powerchairs such as the E800 series which will deliver reliability and functionality far beyond any other brand in the market.”

Craig is now assisting new and existing customers located in the middle of England and brings to Etac UK 15 years of mobility product experience. Not only does Craig have excellent knowledge regarding condition-specific client needs, he also has an outstanding engineering background as he serviced touring rally cars for several years and was part of a pit crew. Craig comments: “I decided to join Etac UK because of its strong brand reputation and the high quality powerchairs it supplies. I am enjoying the camaraderie of the assessment team and look forward to helping clients benefit from the latest solutions in Etac inclusive technology”. Outside of work, Craig is married with two children and enjoys a busy family-orientated lifestyle. Even so, he still manages to watch his beloved motorsport on TV now and again!

When asked to comment on the importance of Debbie and Craig joining the team, Ian Carter, Etac UK Managing Director concludes: “We believe the reliability and quality of our products is market-leading and the team here are fully committed to delivering service and support that reflects this standing in the sector. Debbie and Craig will continue this mission ethos whilst demonstrating the life changing benefits that can be provided by our latest range, the E800 series.
On Stand C135 at Naidex National (NEC, 1–3 May 2012), Etac UK Limited is delighted to announce it will be demonstrating its complete range of world-leading powerchairs to all trade representatives, healthcare professionals and members of the public who visit the event.

Etac has supported Naidex for over a decade and still believes it to be the perfect platform for showcasing its Scandinavian engineered range to the largest and most diverse exhibition audience in the UK. Ian Carter, Etac UK Managing Director comments: “Following on from the success of Naidex South which included the appearance of ex-England Rugby star Matt Hampson on our stand in his Etac Balder powerchair, the UK division of Etac has continued to grow. The launch of our new five-year warranty package on selected E800 series powerchairs here at Naidex National will further strengthen our brand position in the UK and reiterates the reliability of the range. We believe our powerchairs continue to be first choice for so many end users and professionals through a combination of impressive functionality, reliability and comfort – all supported by servicing and customer care that deliver peace of mind.”

Included amongst the comprehensive line-up of powerchairs and accessories that can be seen on stand C135 this year are the following –

Etac E870 and E875 Powerchairs
Introduced in 2011, the Etac E870 and its counterpart E875 (for heavier users) make ideal powerchairs for those users who prefer a flexible model that can be built to suit exacting requirements. Taking ergonomic mobility and functionality to the next level, the E870 and E875 encompass a number of key design features that deliver the less able individual a significantly improved daily living experience. The E870 (maximum user capacity 120kg) and E875 (maximum user capacity 150kg) offer whisper-quiet positioning, ultra-stable front wheel drive for optimum manoeuvrability, electrically adjustable leg rests, and tilting, raising and lowering of the seat. All these features not only offer improved daily mobility, but also deliver assistance with medical conditions relating to pressure, posture and circulation management.

Furthermore the E870 and E875 have powerful long life batteries that will last up to 50km and deliver a top speed of 9.9km/h, making them perfect powerchairs to venture outside as well as in. As with all models in the Etac E800 series, the E870/E875 can be fitted with a wide range of accessories. These include a pommel, rucksack/bag hooks, fold-away tray, thoracic pads, knee pads, attendant controls and an emergency stop switch, providing the user with an even greater sense of individuality and independence.

Etac E880 and E885 Powerchairs
Launched in 2010, the cutting-edge E800 series represents a revolutionary breakthrough in powerchair design and takes ergonomic mobility, reliability and functionality to another level. Developed solely with the end user in mind, the E880 and E885 (for heavier users) are now available with a five-year warranty as standard (conditions apply), which delivers total peace of mind. The Etac E880 and E885 incorporate tilt-in-space, seat raise/lower, backwards/forwards seat slide and side transfer functions in one sleek design and are capable of carrying up to 120kg and 150kg respectively.

Special design features include height adjustable flip-up arm rests, controller with swing-away arm and an ergonomically improved pivot point closer to the hip to complement the natural movement of the body.

In addition, both models offer whisper-quiet positioning, ultra-stable front wheel drive manoeuvrability and a level of control that is unsurpassed in the world today. With built-in intelligence from the onboard computer, the E880 and E885 can be programmed to suit the needs of the individual and are available with an extensive range of accessories. Drive-from-wheelchair capability is also possible through the Etac Automatic Tie-down System.

Etac E890 and E895 Powerchairs
Equipped with the same high levels of mobility, reliability and functionality as the Etac E880 and E885, the Etac E890 and E895 (for heavier users) also include a standing capability. This pioneering assistive technology developed by Scandinavian specialists enables the user to move to a standing position either from lying or sitting so that eye-level interaction with able-bodied individuals is possible. A generously upholstered and ergonomically designed seat makes this model perfect for all day comfort. While a fully adjustable seat, back, foot and leg rests reduce friction and relieve pressure when adjusting the seat position. Furthermore, optional anti-sheer movement ensures that whatever the seat angle, the user’s position is perfectly maintained.

Ideal for both indoor and outdoor use, the Etac Balder F280 has all the advanced features associated with a top-of the-range powerchair. For example, front wheel drive to make handling easier, and a choice of control systems for position, movement and speed. With a smooth and quiet ride, the F280’s batteries have sufficient power to take the user distances of up to 34km at speeds of 9.9km/h before they need recharging. The F280 is supplied with an optional range of different colours, seat fabrics and accessories.

Etac Balder F290 Powerchair
Highly respected and trusted throughout the world, the industry leading Etac Balder F290 has a range of functionality and reliability that is truly exceptional. Thanks to the latest in assistive device technology, it allows the user to move to a standing position from either lying or sitting in one easy and controlled movement.
In addition to front wheel drive, the Etac Balder F290 is fitted with a supporting chest strap and knee brace providing maximum safety and confidence whilst in the standing position. Supporting castors will only power down when the surface is level to ensure the user stands when safe to do so. The F290 can also raise or lower users while sitting or lying from 380mm to a maximum height of 820mm.

Seat, back, foot and leg rests can all be adjusted independently whilst transfers are made simpler thanks to flip-up arm rests and a swing-away arm for the controller. With a maximum width of just 640mm it is possible to pass through standard household doors with ease. An optional range of colours, seat fabrics and accessories allow the less able individual to personalise the Etac Balder F290 to suit his or her own particular taste.

Etac Balder F270 Junior Powerchair
The entry model Balder F270 Junior offers all the advantages of an Etac designed powerchair whilst providing the flexibility to upgrade. The F270 Junior has all the functionality of the adult version but with a smaller seat system. It has a broad range of movement that allows the child to raise and lower their seat to any height that suits. With the use of a tool, it is possible to manually adjust the seat tilt and leg rests; whilst front wheel drive and the powerchairs exceptionally slim-line shape make for accurate manoeuvring. Thanks to a comprehensive range of accessories, the F270 Junior can be customised to ensure this product feels unique and individually designed for the younger powerchair user.

Etac Balder F280 Junior Powerchair
Equipped with all the same features as its adult counterpart, the Etac Balder F280 Junior allows young people to experience much more both inside and out. With its robust design, the F280 Junior will withstand the wear and tear caused by typical children or teenagers as they go about their day. The F280 Junior has a wide range of positions, making it the ideal powerchair for children as it allows them to sit as low as 380mm or as high as 820mm. It is also enables them to either lie flat or tilt backwards up to 45° or forward by as much as 15°.

Maximum comfort is assured at all times through independently adjustable seat, back, foot and leg rests. Such ease of adjustment means the powerchair can fully accommodate the changing needs and demands of a growing child. With puncture proof tyres, front wheel drive and a long life battery that lasts up to 34km, the Etac Balder F280 Junior is incredibly reliable and perfectly well suited to the majority of outdoor excursions. Available in a choice of colours, the F280 Junior can also be fitted with a range of different accessories helping to make the life of a young powerchair user more fun and fulfilling.

Etac Balder F290 Junior Powerchair
Encompassing all the benefits of the adult model, the Etac Balder F290 Junior’s most striking feature is its movement from a sitting or lying to a standing position. As soon as the F290 Junior moves to the upright position, the supporting castors automatically lower but only when the surface is sufficiently level. This ensures that the child user can move safely while standing. A supporting chest strap and knee brace reassure the child and give additional confidence while in the standing position.

The F290 Junior can raise or lower a child as he or she sits or lies. This enables them to reach up higher or down closer to the ground, whilst at the same time, if they wish, tilting forwards and back into more comfortable positions. An ergonomically sculpted seat and back cushion helps to maintain body position and reduce the risk of friction and tissue damage.

As with the Etac Balder F280, the F290 Junior with its front wheel drive, puncture proof tyres, articulated rear axle and a battery life of up to 34km, make it suitable for the even most intrepid explorers wishing to negotiate off-road activities and tricky manoeuvres over uneven terrain.

Etac Balder XP Powerchairs
Ideally suited to the needs of the young user, the Etac Balder XP combines word-class reliability, versatility and robust engineering. Specialist ergonomic movement enables a child to sit as high as 860mm or as low as 460mm, relax in a tilt-in-space position or recline up to 30°.

The XP offers exceptional seating flexibility, postural support and day long comfort, all essential for healthy, happy living. It encompasses a R82 x:panda seating system with an extensive array of ergonomic features such as angle adjustable back rest, a multi-adjustable seat and a uniquely positioned hip pivot point to minimise skin sheering.

Suitable for children from 18 months to their teenage years, the XP is a completely versatile powerchair that has been specially designed to adapt and grow with its owner. A wide range of accessories and a choice of funky colours and graphics, make the XP the powerchair of choice for the younger user.

Etac Automatic Tie-down System
Unique to the Etac E800 and Balder ranges including the XP, the Automatic Tie-down System affords wheelchair users much greater safety when travelling in adapted vehicles, whether they are passengers or drivers.

Successfully tested to the ISO 7176-19 standard by the UK Road Transport Laboratory, the Automatic Tie-down System uses the power of the E800 or Balder to operate a securing mechanism which is then locked on to an anchor point on the vehicle’s floor. This anchor point is easy to install and does not require any extra wiring or electrics. Reverting back to the original vehicle seat poses no problems with the help of an Etac Undercarriage System.
